Welcome to My Blog
Welcome to my blog, “Notes from the Underworld of National Security,” dedicated to the military’s fascinating–and sometimes disturbing–pursuit of science and technology.
I aim to cover three of my favorite subjects: The Pentagon’s obsession with fringe science (as described in my recent book, Imaginary Weapons), advanced military technology (reported on in Defense Technology International (the magazine I edit), and the very unique culture surrounding nuclear weapons, (the focus of my new book).
Many thanks to Sean Meade, a classsmate from Iowa City’s West High, for his help getting this site up and running, and to Nick Rotondo, for the banner art.

Hi, Sharon,
I recently began reading your articles in Defense tech, and just wanted to let you know that I enjoy your writing style, and am looking forward to learning more about the military world through your eyes.

If for nothing else, you deserve points for persistence. Your book is dead but you keep introducing further marketing ploys - forums and plogs over at Amazon, with no significant results. Now this.
Because you stepped on the toes of a very respectable public servant, Dr. Jack Agee, I wrote the following Review for Amazon.
Tiresome nonsense about an obscure topic, July 14, 2006
John Warner (Austin, TX)
It is interesting to see how reviews of Imaginary Weapons mature as people actually read the book before writing about it. The use of Google to search upon the title “Imaginary Weapons,” returns a rich menu of opinions, from blogs and reviews that are not just the panegyrics seen here that are designed to push sales. Starting with “wickedly funny” and “clear to anyone regardless of their education”, we finally arrive at “I am truly sorry to conclude that Imaginary Weapons by Sharon Weinberger is just made-up nonsense, if not worse.” In the forum section below, I find the author’s preference to weave and evade legitimate questions about the provenance of events she described to be particularly telling. Myself, I must agree with George’s conclusion - Imaginary Weapons is made-up nonsense.
Now, in the twilight of your sales, I would like to test this new marketing concept and see if you accept any criticism at all.
One agreed problem with this book is the terrific error rate for names, places, events, and grammar. That immediately gives the impression that accuracy was not important to you. Why didn’t you take the time to get it right? There seems to have been no reason to hurry unless you were trying to publish in time to affect the elections this fall. Maybe that is it, because you had a political statement in your first imaginaryweapons.com promotional website. You owe readers an explanation of how this thing came to market in such a poor form.
While we are at it, I want to propose something further. Your underworld has not been good for you or anybody else; it is time to come back into the light. Your apologies are needed and I bet that would even help sales.
Cheers,
John
